Stretching, Volume or Intensity Exercises, & Chocolate Milk

Stretching, Volume or Intensity Exercises, & Chocolate Milk

– No matter what the gurus tell you, most people who can’t squat properly will benefit from flexibility work. Assuming it is not simply a strength issue, if you stretch the hamstrings, hip flexors and glutes your squat depth and form will usually improve. Over the last 15 years I have had numerous kids who were unable to squat without their butt tucking under at or below parallel. One of the ways to fix this is with stretching. I know, call the exercise police. Or the functional gurus or whoever [...]

Foods That Give Us Energy

Foods That Give Us Energy

By Yuri Elkaim

It’s really unfortunate that the vast majority of the population turns to stimulants instead of looking to whole foods for a boost of invigorating energy. I guess part of the problem is that humans are generally lazy and would rather take the “magic pill” to fix all their problems.

But when it comes to having more energy the irony is that the stimulating foods such coffee, sugar, and energy drinks actually fatigue your body in the long run. Sure they give you a quick jolt of energy but then [...]

3 Foods to Eliminate From Your Plant Based Fat Loss Diet

3 Foods to Eliminate From Your Plant Based Fat Loss Diet

A plant based diet is obviously far healthier than a meat based diet. And it’s easy to get absolutely ripped while following a plant based diet. Unless, of course, you eat like a lot of uneducated vegetarians. Just removing meat and dairy from your diet doesn’t make you any healthier if you are still eating excessive amounts of junk food. Eating more fruits and vegetables does. My colleague, John Alvino has just created an entire set of plant based meal plans (that are only available until Midnight, tonight) that [...]

2 Foods You Should Stop Eating Immediately

2 Foods You Should Stop Eating Immediately

— Ever since I first brought up the countless benefits of switching to a plant based diet nearly two years ago a lot of people have started making smarter nutrition choices. The problem, however is that not all foods are what they appear to be, and everything that goes into making them isn’t always listed on the label. To help clear up some of the confusion I have enlisted the help of my colleague, nutrition and fat loss expert, John Alvino. John has designed an incredible list of plant [...]

Pre Training Nutrition

Pre Training Nutrition

Question: Jay, I’ve been having a little issue with my energy level the last 2 sessions, mostly because of time constraint.  About 2-3 times a week I’m done with work at 6 and get home around 7.  I have dinner around 7:15 – 7:30.  I go to the gym around 8:30 because it closes at 10:30 and I don’t want to be rushed (I take a shower and relax afterwards).

Anyway, yesterday I had a big salad w/ romaine lettuce, spinach, cucumbers, red peppers, tomatoes, olive oil, balsamic [...]

My Diet

My Diet

Question: Coach, I understand that you are a vegetarian like me. I was just wondering if you would be willing to post an example of what your diet looks like.
Thanks,

Keith

Answer: This is a question I get a lot so for whoever is interested here is what a typical day looks like for me. Keep in mind that I am trying to gain back a lot of weight that I lost due to an injury. I have gained 20lbs of muscle back in the last [...]

Finally, a Great Protein Powder

Finally, a Great Protein Powder

As most of you who have followed my writing for a while know, I have never been a big fan of protein powders. That’s because most of the junk available on the market today is made from extremely low quality protein and contains cheap fillers, artificial sweeteners and other dangerous chemicals. I learned this first hand a few years ago when I paid a lab in New Jersey to test the top selling protein powders at the time. Most of these brands tested horribly and you wouldn’t believe [...]

Natures Perfect Sports Drink

Natures Perfect Sports Drink

Not a lot of time for a long post today but I just wanted to share something with you guys that has made a difference for me and my athletes this summer, and that is coconut water. I am not talking about coconut milk, but the actual water inside a coconut. It is great for rehydrating and replenishing electrolytes, not to mention that it tastes great and is an awesome thirst quencher.

By now most of us know about the benefits of coconut oil but until recently not too many people [...]

Eat More Sodium

Eat More Sodium

While most doctors and health professionals try to scare you into avoiding sodium at all costs, this could actually be the worst advice around for anyone looking to enhance their performance or build a better physique. In fact, there are studies which have shown that moderately high levels of dietary sodium produce very few negative effects or are not actually linked to hypertension and other diseases and conditions.

For most of my athletes and clients, eating too much sodium is never a problem; it’s actually consuming too little [...]

Training and eating on the road

Last week I was on a five day adventure trip in Mexico with a couple of my buddies. When I got to the airport I realized that I had forgotten my supply of food that I always travel with and was not happy. It was definitely going to be a long (and hungry) trip.

When I unpacked my bag I also realized that I forgot my jump rope and my TNT cables and Jungle Gym straps that I always travel with. Another bad sign.

You see, I [...]
