The Real Secret to Success

Posted by Jason Ferruggia

successDedication, discipline and brutally hard work.

That is the secret.

Everyone wants hacks and shortcuts and instant gratification. They want it yesterday.

I’m all for applying the 80/20 rule, when appropriate, and eliminating everything that isn’t essential. That’s how you get meaningful work done.

But it’s still work. It’s called work for a reason.

Just because you simplify or focus on a few important things doesn’t mean it’s going to be easy.

And you can’t blindly apply the 80/20 rule to everything. It just doesn’t work that way.

If twenty hours of practice per week are required to be excellent in your sport that doesn’t mean that practicing for four hours will be almost as good. Not even close.

If one hundred reps per week are required to build up a certain muscle group that doesn’t mean you’ll get nearly the same results with twenty reps.

Nothing comes easy. “Overnight success” usually requires at least 5-10 years of hard work.

Grow some balls. Don’t always be looking for “hacks.” There’s a lack of work ethic and a sense of entitlement in the world these days that was non-existent fifty years ago. We’ve become a society of whiny pussies.

It’s easier to blow your paycheck on a flat screen and another pair of fresh kicks than it is to make smart decisions and save up for something more important.

The new pair of Jordan’s make you feel good now. And now is all that matters to a lot of people. How many broke people go out and buy the new iPhone the day it comes out?

FOR WHAT?!

If you focused on the long term you’d be able to save the money you want to start the business you’ve been dreaming of.

It’s more enjoyable in the short term to watch every episode of Homeland, Game of Thrones and House of Cards than it is to turn off the TV and do some work and build for the future.

People claim not to have time. In reply I quote Nas.

“I never sleep, cuz sleep is the cousin of death.”

If you want it bad enough you find a way. If you don’t, you find an excuse.
