Iron and the Soul

By Henry Rollins I believe that the definition of definition is reinvention. To not be like you parents. To not be like your friends. To be yourself. Completely. When I was young I had no sense of myself. All I was, was a product of all the fear and humiliation I suffered. Fear of my parents. The humiliation of teachers calling me “garbage can” and telling me I’d be mowing lawns for a living. And the very real terror of my fellow students. I was threatened and beaten up for the… continue reading.

Spin the Black Circle

I finally got the ok from the doctor, yesterday, to go back to training. Nothing overhead and no heavy pressing, but I can ease my way back into everything else and finally start regaining all the weight I have lost this year. It’s been a long time and I couldn’t take much more of it. I feel like it’s Christmas morning right now and can’t wait to get to the gym today. I got a question about music yesterday and since, along with training, that is my favorite subject… continue reading.

Are You Guilty of Using One of These Pathetic Excuses?

Excuses are everywhere. We’ve all got them and use them more than we should. I’ve been guilty of this and I’m sure you’ve probably been an offender at one time or another, yourself. But we need to stop. No one wants to hear them and no one gives a shit. Below is a list of some of my favorites. –I don’t squat because they’re bad for the knees. –You’re not supposed to squat below parallel. — I don’t need to do legs because I run and go on the stairclimber. –I’m just getting back into it. (For two years?!) –Today… continue reading.

No Excuses

“I Don’t Have Time to Train”

Many times I hear this excuse from people who do absolutely no exercise at all. They say they have no time to train. They feel and look terrible yet they have no intentions of doing anything about it. I was at the park doing some sprints a few days ago and saw a guy there pushing his kids on the swings. When they got off the swings and went to play on something else the guy, in his mid forties, went over to the chin up bar and attempted to do a single rep. He couldn’t even get half way… continue reading.

A Pathetic Excuse

This is an old but very popular post from earlier this year. The email responses to this post were definitely among the highest of the year so I thought I would repost it for anyone who might have missed it. It was written the day after Randy Couture won the UFC world heavyweight title. ********* Last night, UFC legend Randy Couture came out of retirement and won the world heavyweight title at 43 years old. And some people’s excuse for why they are not stronger or bigger or leaner or a better athlete is because they are… too old?… continue reading.

Hardcore Hip Hop For Hardcore Training

Originally written 8/2005 I decided to write this article a few months ago but never got around to it until recently. It wasn’t until last weekend, when I scrolled through Dave Tate’s hip hop training mix on his iPod, that I realized this article was a necessity. Too many people are listening to, and worse yet, training to bad hip hop. Before I get into my recommendations of hip hop to train to I must first tell you why I feel I am qualified to write such an article. Afterall, if I saw a hip hop article written by some… continue reading.

Age is No Excuse

I would like to start by thanking everyone for all the positive responses to the last post on using age as an excuse. Here is just a small sample of what you guys had to say… “Good rant; problem many have is that the medical /allied health community sets the bar way too low. Unless there are serious orthopedic issues or other serious medical issues then most people underestimate their physical capabilities. Our job is to enlighten them and show them the way. Many of those medical conditions are diseases of misuse/ disuse, anyway. Use it or… continue reading.

"Not Bad For An Old Man"

Last night, UFC legend Randy Couture came out of retirement and won the world heavyweight title at 43 years old. And your excuse for why you are not stronger or biggeer or leaner or a better athlete is because you are… too old? How sad and pathetic you must be. Last night was like watching a real life version of Rocky Balboa and the only way not to be motivated by it was if you slept through the fight. Sylvia was the odds on favorite against the older Couture yet he was completely dominated from start to finish. continue reading.

“I Can’t Live Without My Radio”

Since I constantly publicize my obsessive love for music, I often get emails from people asking for recommendations of some good stuff to train to. Music is one of the most important components of a good workout, so in no particular order here are a few of my favorites that are always in high rotation at the gym. We’ll stick with rock and metal today and focus on hip hop later in the week. Wake Up Call- The Prodigy Disposable Teens- Marily Manson Millionaires- Queens of the Stone Age Bullet with Butterfly Wings- Smashing Pumpkins The Fight Song- Marilyn Manson… continue reading.

Music Please

“At first I was afraid, I was petrified…” No way they’re playing this… “Kept thinkin I could never live without you by my side…” What did I do to deserve this? Say it aint so. “But then I spent so many nights thinking how you did me wrong…” Holy shit, they really are playing I Will Survive, in a “gym” in New York City. How a travesty like this could ever be allowed to occur is something that will always boggle my mind. If you own a gym or training center of any kind, one of… continue reading.
