Tiger Woods

tiger woods3 Tiger WoodsI’m very proud to say that I don’t really know too much about the whole Tiger Woods thing. I don’t watch the evening news because I choose not to hear about an 88 year old grandmother getting beat up in the subway. That has zero positive impact on my life. And I like to keep it positive. So I instead watch CNN, MSNBC and SportsCenter to keep up on what’s going on. But I haven’t caught a lot of the Tiger story, nor do I care.

So he likes to sleep with hot chicks apparently. Join the club. Who doesn’t? And who cares? If you started liking Tiger Woods for any other reason than you grew up together it was most likely because of his ability to hit a golf ball. And that’s what he should be judged for. You can’t like him any less now or it would be hypocritical. I personally never liked him that much because, A) I hate golf and B) I always thought he came across horribly in interviews, had zero personality, was a little smug, and just not my kinda guy.

To be that good at something means you have to be somewhat selfish. And that’s not a bad thing; it’s just how it is. Tiger is no different than Michael Jordan. Both were great athletes, both were only interested in themselves, and both were in a position to do a great deal of good for the black community and chose not to.  I’d be more pissed at that than the fact that he was shtooping the waitresses at his favorite restaurant.

Michael Jordan was one of my childhood idols. But did you see his Hall of Fame speech? I cringed throughout the whole thing. I liked him for what he did on the court and always will. Since I’ve grown up a bit between his rookie season and today I realize that he is a bit of a douche off the court. However,  he’s still MJ and the greatest of all time in my eyes.

Next to Walter Payton, Lawrence Taylor was my favorite football player of all time. But talk about a mess of a human being. Even worse than MJ’s hall of fame speech was LT’s interview with Michael Kaye on the YES network a couple months ago. Painful to watch.

Tiger’s the greatest golfer of all time. You knew that. He’s also a d-bag. If you ever watched his interviews with an open mind without being blinded by hero worship, you probably already knew that too.  So what’s the big deal?

The whole Tiger Woods thing is one of those subjects that I’m tired of hearing everyone talk about (along with swine flu, Kanye West, and a host of other things) . . . I don’t watch news programs or read newspapers at all for the reasons you mentioned, yet I still hear about these things because everyone else talks about them (I will look at the cover of a magazine on a newsstand if there is a hot babe on the cover . . . but only the cover).

But being an asshole could very well be part of what makes those guys so competitive in the first place. There isn’t much room for mercy when you’re out on the court, the field, or the course trying to win it all.

Oh, and speaking of Tiger Woods, when I first saw this skit on SNL I thought it was terrible, but then I realized that I could use Blake Lively to derail any on-line discussion of Tiger Woods, which is awesome:

Jason,

Very well said; could not agree with you more. But why watch CNN and MSNBC? You just made too much sense in your article to be watching that liberal news media crap… Peace…

good call. Every time I see something about that guy, whether it’s the current stuff or anything else I’m always temped to ask who cares?

I don’t watch news much either. Nor do I follow much about celebrity or sports icons, regarding their personal lives. It’s unfortunate that their personal lives gets as much attention as they do, because I sure don’t want my kids idolizing the personal lives of most celebrities. I give athletes and generally any gifted individuals the props they deserve, for what they do. As a general rule of thumb, I figure if a famous person isn’t in the media, then they musn’t be crashing cars, cheating on spouses..etc. They’re famous people, living their lives in a relatively normal way, ‘media free. Good for them. I was always impressed that Tiger could bench 300 lbs, if that is true. Personally, I’m more impressed by that, than Golf, because I am not a fan of the sport either.

Just like your baseball-steroids posts in the past this is right on the money. I haven’t followed or cared much about the whole Tiger thing. Golf is about as much fun as watching paint dry.

MJ was the best ever. And a complete ass off the court. Just like you I grew up completely idolizing the guy until I grew up and saw was a D-Bag he was (gambler, cheated on his wife, general asshole to teammates). But I still love the guy for his basketball prowess, still crave the kicks and still dream of being Mike while running up and down the court.

Ditto LT. Loved him on the football field but what a train wreck off. He is the best linebacker ever in my opinion (F you Ray Lewis).

I’ve only heard what happened through other people at the gym and the office.

Great summary paragraph, totally nailed the truth of it.

I agree with everything! When you ask “So whats the big deal?” my only reply would be whether you like him or not its disheartning and disgusting what he did to his family. As a married man we all can be put in those situations and im going to be honest , my wife knows im guilty of looking at the waitresses nice ass but what he did is Just Wrong!

When they spend so much time on Tiger, but leave out new info about healthcare, insurance, and credit card reform, the war in Irag and Afganistan, and so on….I know that they are only concerned about ratings and the almighty dollar not what is affecting our lives. I don’t know Tiger personally and don’t care about what isn’t none of my business. Right on Jay!

Sleeping with hot chicks is normal. Cheating on your wife and family isn’t. Unfortunately, a lot of people lack integrity and don’t know right from wrong.

He was sending emails to these cokehead girls telling them how he pretty much isn’t satisfied with his wife/home life.

Like I always say….If you’re a pro athlete, wait until after you retire to get married.

I will give Tiger one thing.

He brought strength and size to sport full of weak fatasses.

Haha, Jay speaking it like it really is..

If you haven’t read it already, get your hands on this past weeks Sports Illustrated, where they present Jeter with their “Sportsman of the Year” Award. It’s a really well written article by Verducci and really captures Jeter well. I was never a shortstop growing up so I never idolized Jeter the way I do now after reading the article.

But, you called it with Tiger – we should’ve noticed he wasn’t going to stay “perfect” a while back…

Be like Mike and be a super athlete, who doesn’t? off court you are supposed to be whoever your parents prepared to be as a person to live in society and behave as such. Now tiger’s getting hurt where he can feel it, in the wallet.

Jason you rock and that post hit it right on the head. I saw Michael Jordan’s hof speech and could taste a little vomit in my mouth after I watched it. Just to give some perspective: I’m a black man who grew up during the whole Airness era, played basketball, and bought all of his shoes. Always had a lot of respect for Tiger Woods ability. The truth is these guys are assholes and it’s a little sad that they don’t take the responsibility to help the black community more than they do. Their concern is about the bottom line and being as mainstream as possible which I guess is fine. However, both (and a lot of athletes that are worshipped into “god like” status) aren’t that special off the playing field and wouldn’t be shit w/out their God-given ability. I can totally see Michael Jordan as a garbage man or Tiger Woods as a busboy. They should be a little more humble in my opinion.

Personally I dont give a flying fuck if Tiger Woods decided to have a threesome involving a Thailand tranny and Hornswoggle from the WWE.

However he is in the spotlight and a role model to many youngsters and whether he likes it or not his image of being the absolute professional in his personal life and golfing career is a large reason as to why he makes so much money from endorsements. So from that point of view from being a role model (not to mention a good husband/father) he fucked up royally.

Like many of the others who posted comments, I couldn’t care less about Tiger Woods’ personal life. So he proved that he’s human and can mistakes just like the rest of us mere mortals. He screwed up and now he has to deal with it…

However, I never considered the “role model” angle and it’s made me think about the situation in a different way. It’s changed my opinion from that of indifference to disdain.

Yeah right on!!! i’d congratulate that brat while on tour and go to shake his hand and he’d look at it and turn away-what an asshole.

i totally agree with my ho-wanda sykes-it was the black in him that bought the caddy and it was the asian in him that crashed it!!!

Jonh. Where did that come from about giving away material posession to prove ethics? I think everyone pretty much agrees with the fact that they are greats at what they do. Noone can take that from them. But they’re just people. Black, white.. whatever. I don’t follow the careers of celebritites to draw inspiration, myself, but I suppose if people do that, wouldn’t they be disappointed? There are millions of married men who don’t rise to fame, yet they remain ethical in what they do. Ethics also involve moral judgement. Wouldn’t you say he just trampled all over his wife? There are likely 5 men and women on any street that someone could be inspired by, far more than Tiger Woods or any other celebrity, that have lived honest ethical lives. Do you think that young kids who look up to some like him, will understand that his personal life, now under the microscope, is the norm? I know if my kid was going to be a pro athlete and were going to do those sorts of things, I’d have to take responsibility in not doing a better job showing him that those sorts of things are just plain wrong, celeb or not. These guys have impact on people, good and bad. They don’t ask for it, but that’s the price of fame.

Mark RNo Gravatar @ 11:08 am #

Right on Jason and Adam. Tiger Woods likes the 19th hole and the 20th hole and the 21st hole and so on. He’s addicted to golf it seems. Do you think hecares about little Johnnie when his nuts are in a sling?? I’m just saying….

I think the big deal is that you Jason could see him for the douche he is from his interviews and probably many other people couldn’t, I think thats why its a big deal a lot of people can now see him for who he is and are disappointed. People can go on and on about how its his own life etc etc, the fact is people get disappointed for many different reasons some which seem stupid to others and im sure the people who are saying they couldn’t care less have been disappointed over some situation others might find trivial. Cheating on your wife says a lot about your character, even though there are many people who say they couldn’t care less if he had a threesome or a gang bang I’m sure those same people would not cheat on their wife/husband and if they do theyre as pathetic as tiger is. In any situation where someone cheats on their partner people other than just the two involved in the relationship are disappointed, it seems to be the same with tiger just on a larger scale as he is known world wide.
