Oh, and I almost forgot the most important thing - if either kid had a gift in a particular sport I would continue to encourage them to keep playing anything else that interests them, along with three days a week at Renegade.

Jay - I love this post and thanks for repeating this series. It is timely advice, even now, five years later. My kids are 8 and 4. I see a lot of this already with some of their classmates - schedules that do more harm than good, specialization in a sport, playing one sport year-round. If you ask me this is all a recipe for burnout. Baseball was the first sport I played as a kid and it remains my favorite sport to watch but I played so long I became burned out by high school and disinterested. Basketball was the last major sport I started playing, much later than my peers and it became my obsession through high school and beyond. In between I tried wrestling and didn't like it (it was not like the WWF I adored), played Football for a few years, swung a tennis racket here and there and smacked some golf balls. And there was plenty of pickup games with friends - the sport changing daily. Thankfully my parents let me choose what to play and when. I got a taste of everything and had a lot of fun too. Hopefully I can provide that same atmosphere for my own kids - it doesn't matter what they play, just get out, be active and have some fun. If, at some point either one of them shows a gift in a particular sport I'll sign them up at Renegade to get stronger, faster and better - but I'll still press that they have fun.
