Spin the Black Circle

13

nwa Spin the Black CircleI finally got the ok from the doctor, yesterday, to go back to training. Nothing overhead and no heavy pressing, but I can ease my way back into everything else and finally start regaining all the weight I have lost this year. It’s been a long time and I couldn’t take much more of it. I feel like it’s Christmas morning right now and can’t wait to get to the gym today.

I got a question about music yesterday and since, along with training, that is my favorite subject in the world to discuss, I will gladly ramble on.

Listing everything I train to would take me all day but some of my favorites are:

- Public Enemy

- Rage Against the Machine

- Slayer

- NWA

- Eminem

- Ice Cube

- Killswitch Engage

- Static X

- D12

- DMX

- Black Sabbath

- Metallica

- Superjoint Ritual

- Pearl Jam

- Metallica

- Nashville Pussy

- Pantera

- Smashing Pumpkins

- Pantera

- Run DMC

- Nas

- 2Pac

- The Game

As far as the newest stuff I have gotten, One Day as a Lion is great. In case you don’t know, that is Zach from Rage Against the Machine and Jon Theodore, the drummer from the Mars Volta. It’s a five song EP and every track is worth the money.

When I return to the gym later I will listen to that along with these other recent tracks that I just added to today’s playlist:

- Dope Boys by The Game

- Sly Fox by Nas

- Tomorrow by Ice Cube

- Kill the Emperor by Everlast

- State of Emergency by The Game featuring Ice Cube

- Black President by Nas

- It Takes a Nation by Ice Cube

To round it out I threw a few older tracks on there which are great songs to train to:

- Ante Up Remix by MOP featuring Busta Rhymes

- 187 Um (Deep Cover Remix) by Dr. Dre featuring Snoop Dogg

- Who’s the Man by House of Pain

- I Aint Goin Out Like That by Cypress Hill

I’ve seen you mention the Beautiful Girls in some of your music suggestions, great band by the way, not exactly training music though very cool. Thought you might be interested in some other Aussie bands , so here’s a list of a few to check out.
The Butterfly Effect
Karnivool
Grinspoon
The Living End
Cog
Birds of Tokyo
Shihad/Pacifier(NZ)
and of course Wolf Mother

Enjoy

Jay,

Great list. I share your love for good classic hip hop & rap music. Here are some of my favorites to train to (although it may be too mainstream for you)…

-Scenario (Tribe Called Quest & Busta)
-Slam (Onyx…my 10-yr old daughter knows the lyrics to this jam and I’m damn proud… although I won’t let her cuss)
-the Choice is Yours (Black Sheep)
-time for some akshun (red man…my bball team in high school used to warm-up to this one)
-Microphone Fiend (Eric B & Rakim)
-Fight the Power (PE)
And my all-time favorite that gets me pumped (don’t know why, but it triggers some primal effect)…
-The Big Payback by the Godfather, James Brown

Thanks for the great training advice.

Peace,
Chris Lopez

I listen to “List of Demands (Reparations)” by Saul Williams at least 3 times each workout… for my hardest sets. Check it out.

Thanks for answering my question, Jason! I’m so happy!
I’m definitely going to print this off and frame it.

You’re my hero. I read your book, ‘Fit to Fight’ religiously and have had insane results…and I’m a girl!

We listen to a lot of the same music when we work out, so you should trust me and try out Celtic Frost’s Progeny and Black Flag’s Guns. They make me pick up the intensity no matter how exhausted I might be. Also, when I work out, I have this ‘Spartacus’ inspired motto: “I am Jason Ferrugia.”

Take care, and I hope you get better!

Nice! Dude – We should get all the hardcore lifters and trainers to put in their favorite training music and compile a list -

I ‘defiantly’ appreciate the the twice mentioning of Pantera on your list. I would have listed them at least twice myself. Below are a few of my top lifting songs.

Godsmack – Whatever
Damageplan – Reborn
Lamb of God – In Defense of Our Good Name
Metallica – Battery, Leper Messiah, Harvester of Sorrow, The Thing That Should Not Be, many more
Method Man – Judgement Day
Motorhead – Ace of Spades
Opeth – Blackwater Park
Pantera – Domination, Primal Concrete Sledge, Becoming, 13 Steps to Nowhere, Regular People, many more
Slayer – Raining Blood, Seasons in the Abyss, South of Heaven
Tool – 46 and 2, Stinkfist

Cheers

thanks for the suggestions all.
Might I suggest Skunk Anansie?
I also like Transvision Vamp (sorry-I grew up in the 80s!)
Eminem-til I collapse is also one I like at the end of the workout when I need to grind it out.

Nick
