Excellence guidance ...I certainly fit into that descirption - 47 y/old and wants to lift weights forever so what keeps me going and looking forward to tunring up every week to the weight room is the Minimalist training style.
I tried the high volume stuff, it wasn't effective at all and became a chore turning up.
So thanks for slight push in the right direction.

Great article. I agree that training is occasionally dictated by testing methods which results in suboptimal results. If you will testes on your bench strength, why would you do incline dumbell chest press (which may or may not give better results and better performance on the football field). Testing in sport should be skills specific, and that way training wont be guided by the testing methods, and instead guided by what really works, which i agree are simple, multi-muscle whole body exercises like squats and dead lifts. Keep up the great work.

Hi Jason, I also like reading your stuff which ive been doing since a few years back when i followed some of your tips on gaining mass (for skinny guys). On that note I have a quesiton i was hoping you could answer?
Prior to using your program i had been working out a few years on and offm but not with the best results. After my long break i picked up on your program and after 2 months i went from liftiing 8kg in biceps exersices to 15kg (fewer reps of course), I gained enough for people to notice that i was working out, and it felt great. I had been following your advice on always advancing in the gym weather it be by more reps or more kilos. But unfortunately not long after I got problems with my shoulders, and training kinda stopped, and I didnt really pick up with same succes since. Today I know that i propably should have taken it more slow and trainers recommend a 3 month period for people starting out, where they take it very slow, which it didnt mention in your program. My question then: How do I take it slow over a 3month period and at the same time accelerate like i did 2 years ago???

Thanks in advance and keep up the good advice you give out!!

Brother, I totally enjoyed your article and it makes perfect sense and confirmed to me I have been on the right track for years! I totally or I should say mostly abide by your sound philosophy. Keep it simple and stick to that basics. I am nearly m57 and still squat, dead lift, bench, do military presses and leg presses on a regular basis. It keeps me young at heart and in body. I went to a diner party this evening and the host took me aside and told me I look fantastic and beefed up. I felt great about that. I will be back to read more and follow your work! and I don't take my cell phone to the gym! I hate it went guys and gals at the gym are hanging all over the equipment on the cell phone, I for one unplug as much as possible.

Hi Jason, great article, you always right certain articles at the right time. Lately I've been trying to get back to weight training and be the best athlete i can be because i'm going out for college football in six months. I almost don't even want to read t nation and other blogs anymore because it seems like when one guy writes a training article five other well respected coaches fire back with their methods the next day. Get great at a few things rather than suck at twenty, hell most of the time the pros are great because they focus on the basics.

One thing I love about coming here, Jason, is that you have exercises for people at various levels. It's great for me because I'm strong in some areas (strong legs) but can't do a chin up. It's awesome that I can come here and learn now to strengthen what's weaker.

How's the new product going? Are you going to make one for women? yet?
