People don’t change. That’s what they say, right? But who are they? And who are you, as a free thinking Renegade to listen to them anyway?
Perhaps heeding the words of someone a bit wiser, like the great American poet, Henry Rollins would be a better idea…
“I believe that one defines oneself by reinvention. To not be like your parents. To not be like your friends. To be yourself. To cut yourself out of stone.”
This has been a guiding principle throughout my life; reinvention and constantly trying to better myself.
That’s what the snake tattoo on my arm represents in the traditional Japanese mythology. The snake is always shedding its skin and evolving. To remain stagnant would be the same as dying.
You can never remain stagnant, my friends. The quest for self improvement is not something that you can take a break from. It’s an every day, all day thing.
I’m a different person than I was five years ago. And I will be a different person in another five years; as will many of you, I’m sure. Because I know you guys get it and want it to excel more than most people do.
Like Jets head coach, Rex Ryan says, “Every day, everybody needs to strive to get just a little bit better.” And even though I’m a Giants fan, first and foremost, I hear those words in my head every morning when I wake up.
Like anything else it takes daily practice and reminders. You don’t become a better musician or athlete without practicing on a regular basis, hour after hour. Nor do you become a better, more productive, more successful (financially and emotionally) person without ritualistically practicing each and every hour of the day.
This daily routine includes associating only with positive people and eliminating all negative forces from your life. It includes having a schedule that you follow without allowing outside forces to steer you off track. It includes making lists, meditating, training, listening to motivational music or recordings and reading a select number of good books and blogs that you derive motivation from (like this one, hopefully).
New Look, Same Attitude
With that in mind I’m proud to introduce our brand new site to the Renegade Nation. Special thanks goes out to Derek, Alex and Eoin for all their help and the great job they did. This is the third version of the site since we started it back in 2006 and by far the best, in my opinion. Onward and upward.
I’m loving the overall look and feel and am really digging some of the cool new upgrades we’ve added. I hope you guys do to and would appreciate any feedback.
2011 was by far and away the best year ever for the Renegade Nation. Readership steadily grew into the hundreds of thousands, we had more new training programs released than any year before, there were live events, we brought more high profile, big name clients into the family, we were voted as one of the top 100 most influential forces in fitness right up there with trainers who appear on TV in front of a much larger audience… But that was nothing.
2012 has to be even bigger. Inspired by my friend Craig Ballantyne, I have made it my mission to bring the Renegade way to one million people and help them reach their strength and fitness goals while improving their productivity and helping them live happier, more successful lives.
But I can’t do it alone. I need your help.
I need you guys to constantly get better every day and I want to hear about it… on the blog, through email, on Facebook and Twitter, in person, everywhere. That will serve as my motivation.
No one can do it alone. We all need a support team. And you guys are mine.
I’m accountable to you guys and you’re all accountable to each and every other Renegade out there across the globe.
Moving Foward
Growing the Renegade Nation to one million strong is my big, hairy, audacious goal for the next few years. Short term I will continue hustling in the pursuit of numerous short term goals including the expansion of Renegade to the West Coast, of which I will keep you all updated on later in 2012.
As for my own fitness goals going forward I have some things I need to work on. Firstly, I’m a horrible traveler. I end up either not eating because there are no healthy options, or eating junk food because I put off eating for so long that I make myself sick and have to eat whatever’s in sight. Not cotton candy, mind you, but stuff I normally wouldn’t eat. I need to make a much better effort to be prepared and keep my nutrition on point when I’m on the road.
I’ve always had difficulty sleeping for as long as I can remember. This year I made it my goal to work on and dramatically improve that. I did and am sleeping a lot better but there are still some steps I can take to improve it even more. I need to train earlier in the day and finish eating a bit earlier every night. I also need to make sure all work related stuff is completely off my mind by a certain hour. When I do those things I sleep better. Now I just need to make them unbreakable habits.
Finally, I need to continue to temper my enthusiasm for training. In the past I have gotten injured plenty of times because I couldn’t control myself and just love training so damn much. Over the last year I’ve gotten significantly better at this but there is still much room for improvement and I will be constantly working on it.
How Can You Get Better?
To wrap this up I have a few questions for you:
What is your biggest weakness that you need improve upon?
What is holding you back from reaching your goals that needs to be eradicated? Think long and hard and be brutally honest with yourself. We can’t fix something if we’re not willing to identify it as a problem and put it out there for all to see.
Lastly, what are your biggest fitness/lifestyle goals for 2012? Not bullshit New Years resolutions, but real, attainable goals that you can and WILL conquer in the next 12 months.
To kick the new blog off right let’s get 100 comments from some fired up Renegades who are ready to kick ass, take names and change the world!
Thanks again for all of your support.

My biggest weakness is my mobility and flexibity and being consistent with that stuff.
The main thing holding me back is actually my self-lessness. I need to be a little more selfish when it comes to my personal workouts and such. I give a lot to my business and clients, but need to be more strict with set workout times and not breaking them for my self.
My workout goals for 2012 are to gain some strength as always, but also stay healthy and injury free so I can participate in sports and other activities full force. Also, to continue to grow by business and provide others with jobs and opportunities.

Mobility and flexibility was always a huge weakness for me. Same deal about only caring about others training and not paying enough attention to my own.

Awesome as usual, Jay. New site looks awesome. You have been and remain a great influence on my life.
My biggest weakness I am working to address everyday is analysis paralysis. I try to know to much or be to sure before I take action. I nee to ‘Load, Fire, Aim’ a bit more in my life. Its a daily struggle and scary as help but I will make it happen.
What is holding me back from reaching my goals that needs to be eradicated? I think a lot of the above (and BS student loans that aren’t helping me at all), but also lack of singular focus. I went to school to be a teacher (health and PE) but I no longer have a passion for this. There are no jobs in the field, you reach very few students, are looked down upon and unappreciated. I am exploring new avenues of how to reach people…I am about to take the CSCS exam to hopefully lead me into a S&C job to help pay the debts and get me some $ to start my own training army. It an arduous process but one I am passionate about. I will find a way.
Lastly, what are your biggest fitness/lifestyle goals for 2012?
1. Cut out the things that suck the life out of me – partying (im only 25 its rough), clients that aren’t willing to work or listen, friends that judge me for not fitting into the mold of selling my soul to a company or going to grad school.
2. 2011 has been a rough year on the body. I had my right shoulder labrum repaired this past October (flag football injury), and will be having my right hip labrum repaired in February (played socccer for 16 years). I completely get the being injured but cant stay away thing. Its time for me to get healthy though. 2012 is the year to heal and then crush in when I am back. Game on.

I aim to finally become injury free and by that i mean injuries that stop you reaching your true potential. I want 2 stone of muscle back by the end of 2012 and be leaner than ever. I want to improve all lifts and be functionally stronger and better conditioned
I want my organisational skills on the button so I get more done, in training/health as well as business, but more importantly not letting my passion/career overshadow my family. I will learn to switch off!
Financially i want to be debt free, everyones goal i guess, but making fitness my new career this year was a massive step and although i have made progress want to explode it in 2012
Looking forward to the ride :-)

Diet, (I love food) and when to eat. I have read countless articles that have different theories on this matter, just tell me when an what. I am really focused at the start of a fittness program then I sabotage myself an quit or backoff. What are my biggest fitness/lifestyle goals for 2012? Stop the cycle,an stick to one program that works for me and helps me reach my lifestyle fittness goals.

The new site looks good Jason, have been following the training advice from your book and blogs and will continue to do so in the new year and beyond.

My biggest “weakness” I consider it to be constantly refreshing this page through the day just in case you’ve posted a new article… instead of applying what I have already learned and take action (always lurking for your newest theory or articles about training).
What’s holding me back? I need to deload a hell a lot more often, and start going to sleep earlier.
Goals:
- Reach 180-190lbs BW with around 10% BF (currently 161 pounds at 5’10”).
- Have a 1RM Squat over 315lbs (curently 260lbs)
- 1RM Deadlift of 375lbs (currently 310lbs)
- 1RM Bench Press of 205lbs (currently 165)
- 1RM Militar Press of 150lbs (currently 115)
Working to it starting NOW!… that will give me 2 more weeks advantage ;)

Great stuff man and love the Rollins picture. Henry is the man.
My biggest obstacle is crazy stress levels working 3 jobs plus research and it impacts my ability to rest/relax and sleep.
I am great about making it to the gym (garage gyms are the best) and normally train 6 days a week, but I will cut back on sleep first which leads to issues later on.
Biggest goal is to finally finish my crazy PhD in exercise physiology It’s been a long, long road, going on 6 years in just grad school for it and about 11 years before I even started the program (BA and MS before) and a stint in another grad program. I am tired of writing research, but I know that I finish what I start and it WILL be completed, step by step.
This will free up some time to work on my fitness business more in addition to teaching still and some coaching. Being in a position to make a difference in people’s lives already for years is so amazing for which I am blessed, but just like you, I want to take it to a bigger scale. Their is no shortage of need out there. It is time to elevate the entire industry to a new level to help even more people in the process.
Performance wise my main goal is to kiteoard more often, which is such a blast. Whoo ha!
More directly related to the weight room is to pull 734 lbs on my Dinnie Stone Deadlift trainers in prep to lift the actually Dinnie Stones in Scotland. It will happen, it is just a matter of time and getting stronger :) I have about 230 more pounds to go and should be close by this time next year. I was able to add about 70 lbs this year, even though I did not train them much until half way through the year. Reducing some stress will be a huge help too. The Dinnies will get lifted at some point.
Keep up the excellent work here! I loved your interview with BC in his OSP a few months back too.
Rock on and all the best

Hey Jay, the site looks great!
1. My biggest weakness is keeping up with mobility and flexibility. I can go to the gym and give it my all no problem, but I find it really hard to do all the mobility and flexibility stuff I KNOW will help me a ton.
2. I believe my the thing holding me back the most is not eating enough. I eat really healthy and do the RD but I don’t think I eat enough to gain weight (I talked to you about this at your seminar, which was amazing by the way!)
3. For my goals, this year I want to do something a little different. Instead of focusing on gaining this much muscle or lifting this much weight, I want to focus more on making sure I’m doing some sort of training 20 days each month (a la Alwyn Cosgrove). Whether it be at the gym, sprints, fasted a.m. walking or even some martial arts or yoga, I want to focus on “doing” and I think the results will follow (with your guidance on the Inner Circle, of course).
Thanks for everything you do and be sure to let us know what we can do to help you hit your goals too!

Great new look to sight!
My greatest weakness currently: Not consistently eating enough calories to gain mass.
What is holding me back the most: Probably too much stress and not enough rest.
My goals for 2012:
Body Weight >175lb at <11% BF (15 lb increase, same or better body fat)
Squat: 315×1 RM
Deadlift: 405×1 RM
Military Press: 175×1 RM
DB Incline Press: 100×5 RM

What is your biggest weakness that you need improve upon?
Flexibility and mobility for sure. My hips are really holding back my leg days.
What is holding you back from reaching your goals that needs to be eradicated?
Need to be more consistent with eating. I do really well for a few weeks at a time but eventually things get bust, my motivation for cooking dies, and my metabolism just destroys my weight gains.
Lastly, what are your biggest fitness/lifestyle goals for 2012?
I really want to join an MMA gym

Great new website and post! It made me acknowledge my weaknesses and challenges, here they are-
Biggest weaknesses: Diet (giving in to cravings for sweets and carbs; not eating properly post workout) and impatience (wanting to see results fast and getting discouraged when I don’t)
Biggest thing holding me back: Letting “life” get in the way of a good diet, proper sleep, and consistent training.
Goals for 2012:
Diet- cut out sugars and grains completely except for the occasional cheat meal; work up to fasting for 14-16 hours
Training- do mobility/stretching 4-5x /week and sprints 2x /week; bench 140, press 100, deadlift 230, squat 215, do 8-10 chinups
Lifestyle- improve stress management and also better time management/planning with regards to my diet and workouts. No more excuses!

Hi Jason, new site is looking good dude, well done.
I know I am going way off topic here but just have a question maybe for a future blog post.
Was just wondering what your thoughts were on client screening, you hear a lot about it and have also heard some top guys saying it is overated as most people have the same basic problems and just need to focus on their training.
Do you do much screening?
Thanks

Great post Jay and digging the new blog.
I need to get on a better schedule so I can get more work accomplished daily.
With my training, I need to continue to get out from under the barbell all the time, and dive even more into kb, bodyweight, and other training methods not just for myself, but also my athletes.

Jason,
I am 2nd year university student pushing for a first team place in Rugby. One main area of my game that i think is my weakness is speed. I was wondering if there were any recommendations for exercises i could do to improve this.
For example does over-speed training work well? Which leg exercises shall i do in the gym paired with which conditioning exercises?
Many thanks, great site

First off, I love the new website! I think it is largely your influence that has led me to become a strength coach myself!! I have enjoyed every single one of your posts for the last 3 or so years!!
My biggest weakness by far is my squats! I used to take pride in them but since I had knee surgery 4 months ago I have been working single leg work and deads and lots of other things but my full squat is not going up as fast as I like! I also feel that I do not dedicate enough time to programming my own training!! I have books and excel files on my computer full of client results and programmes etc. but I look at my log book and theres lots of mondays, occasional Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursdays and never much logged after that, not that I dont train then, it’s just that I get pre-occupied with other stuff!!
2 things that are holding me back from my goals were (and still sometimes are): NUMBER 1- distractions!!! Procrastination is a terrible thing to a trainer like myself and stops me from focussing all of my attention on tasks at hand!
number 2 – Saboteurs, I have many friends who are in shape but with a shitty diet, and other friends that have no motivation in life, I do my best to keep away from these guys but as I regularly come across them it is tough!
My goals are being thought out carefully over the next couple of weeks, in January I move away from London, provisionally to Las Vegas and will be training at the Tapout Training Center there. I am on a path to becomming not simply a jack of all trades but a master of them! I completed my first 20 second handstand hold (with no wall) and am now easily ‘clean and jerk’ my 15kgs more than my bodyweight!! I am looking to increase all my lifts but cut my bodyweight to a lean 210 (currently around 225), I know I will accomplish the goals I set out!!
Look forward to another new journey

My biggest weakness would be my lack of willpower. I’ve told myself many times, to start training, as I’m in lousy shape.
This is also what’s holding me back, and what I want to get over in new year. And I will succeed. :)
Task might sound easy, but it’s not for me. Longest time I actually trained was 2 or 3 weeks, than I quitted. So I hope I will be able to overcome this weakness and train through whole year.

As most of these guys (and gals maybe) here, my biggest weakness is my lack of willpower. But all this is behind me now, because I started training, and I feel a lot better now about myself, and this is mostly because of you Jason. So good luck, hope for no injuries and train hard and smart :)
