Shelby Starnes on Carb Cycling

Shelby Starnes on Carb Cycling

Today I have a quick interview I did with Shelby Starnes (pictured to the left) on the topic of carb cycling.

JF: Shelby, most people would agree that carb consumption is necessary for muscle growth and optimal performance. So some people think, “Well, if that’s the case, why not just go high carbs all the time?” Can you briefly explain the benefits of high carbs and then why you can’t go high carb all the time?

SS: A high carb intake will secrete a lot of insulin, which is a hormone that [...]

Carb Cycling Made Easy- Part 2

Carb Cycling Made Easy- Part 2

Now that we know how many carbs you need to consume each day let’s get into the exact carb cycling breakdown. The only thing that won’t really change on any of the days is protein. Protein should remain constant at right around one gram per pound of bodyweight per day on average. There’s really no need for most people to go much higher than this unless your carbs are extremely low. Then you might go as high as 1.5 grams per pound. But to keep things simple we’ll leave it [...]

Carb Cycling Made Easy- Part 1

Carb Cycling Made Easy- Part 1

The first time I experimented with carb cycling was some time back in the early 90’s, largely influenced by the work of Michael Zumpano and the late Dan Duchaine. I was blown away by how incredibly well this worked so I immediately enlisted a few more test subjects to try it out on. Again, the results were awesome. My brother, our friend Todd and I all got in the best shape we’d ever been in to date. After that I had some clients try it and the results were the [...]

Minimalism Part 5: Meal Frequency

Minimalism Part 5: Meal Frequency

One of the great things about embracing the concept of minimalism is that it’s liberating and gives you a sense of freedom. Ya know, the kind of freedom that comes from having to prepare meals every 90 minutes and eat every two hours on the button. The kind of freedom that comes with weighing your food and counting all of your macronutrients at every meal. The freedom that carrying Tupperware containers full of steamed broccoli and chicken breasts everywhere you go brings.

Ah… that’s the life, aint it?

Sounds like… sounds like… [...]

Minimalism Part 3: Nutrition

Minimalism Part 3: Nutrition

For the last five months I wished for nothing more than an empty schedule on Friday nights to watch another episode or three of what is now one of my all time favorite shows, The Wire. Jen and I started watching the series in June and it became our new obsession. In my opinion, Omar Little was one of the greatest TV characters in history (who didn’t regularly eat at Monks). “Oh, indeed.”

Since we finished the series on Thursday I was kind of lost on Friday night. So I got [...]

Natural Testosterone Boosters

Natural Testosterone Boosters

Question: Are there any natural testosterone boosters that could raise my levels without having to resort to drugs? What about lifestyle choices?

Answer: Firstly, as far as testosterone boosting  supplements go you have a few different options.

My colleague, Dr. Tom Incledon, a world renowned scientist in the field of anti-aging and natural hormone therapy since 1989 has come up with an outstanding product that I have used myself and with numerous clients recently that does an outstanding job of increasing testosterone levels naturally.

As with any supplement I was a bit skeptical [...]

Less Dairy, More Fruit & Vegetables

Here’s part 3 of my recent interview for Craig Ballantyne.

Craig Ballantyne: Why don’t we just stick with nutrition a little bit and talk about your personal nutrition now? So, talk about your general nutrition approach for yourself and how that’s working for any of your clients that are using it as well.

Jason Ferruggia: I don’t think there was anyone that ate more meat and dairy than I did back in the day.

I would have a gallon of milk a day, a dozen eggs, and at least a pound [...]

How to Stay Hydrated

How to Stay Hydrated

Question: What is the best way to stay hydrated during training camp and two-a-days? Is there a certain hydration “procedure” during hot weather workouts, which may or may not be limited to a certain form of drink mix.. ( ie, fruit, vitamin supplements, change of food intake, etc.. )

Despite the best efforts of football staffs, we seem to hear of disasters in this area every year……I want to just try and give my son every advantage that I can…

Answer: The best thing I’ve found, that I I’ve used with [...]

Muscle Building Smoothie Recipes

Muscle Building Smoothie Recipes

Aside from the constant barrage of date requests I get from a fully intoxicated Britney Spears (that chick won’t take no for answer), one of the most frequent emails that’s been coming my way lately is a request for muscle building smoothie recipes.

So today I’m going to show you how to make a few of my favorite drinks. The ones that don’t kill brain cells, that is.

First things first- like mom always said…

“Turn down that goddamn music!”

“I found another condom wrapper and empty six pack under your bed!”

“You history teacher [...]

Super Bowl, UFC & More Cheat Meals

Super Bowl, UFC & More Cheat Meals

First of all, congratulations are due to the new Super Bowl Champs, the New Orleans Saints. It was definitely deserved and it’s obviously a great thing for that city.

Although I am incredibly happy for the city of New Orleans I am also a big Brett Favre fan. I thought it would have been a cool story to see Brett come back and lead his team to the Super Bowl after having the greatest season of his long career.

I particularly liked the post game press conference when Brett said that no [...]
